Happy Four-Twenty Humour

Happy 320 - happy four-twentyThe National Institute on Drug Abuse interrupts this broadcast to bring you the following misinformation about the health effects of pot. WARNING: The following information may be offensive to people who care about truth.

Q: What happens after a person smokes marijuana?

A: Within a few minutes of inhaling marijuana smoke, the user will likely feel, along with intoxication, a dry mouth, rapid heartbeat, some loss of coordination and balance, and a slower than normal reaction time. Blood vessels in the eye expand, so the user's eyes look red.

For some people, marijuana raises blood pressure slightly and can double the normal heart rate. This effect can be greater when other drugs are mixed with marijuana, but users do not always know when that happens.

As the immediate effects fade, usually after 2 to 3 hours, the user may become sleepy.

Q: How long does marijuana stay in the user's body?

A: THC in marijuana is readily absorbed by fatty tissues in various organs. Generally, traces (metabolites) of THC can be detected by standard urine testing methods several days after a smoking session. In heavy, chronic users, however, traces can sometimes be detected for weeks after they have stopped using marijuana.

Q: Can a user have a bad reaction?

A: Yes. Some users, especially those who are new to the drug or in a strange setting, may suffer acute anxiety and have paranoid thoughts. This is more likely to happen with high doses of THC. These scary feelings will fade as the drug's effects wear off.

In rare cases, a user who has taken a very high dose of the drug can have severe psychotic symptoms and need emergency medical treatment.

Other kinds of bad reactions can occur when marijuana is mixed with other drugs, such as PCP or cocaine.

Q: How is marijuana harmful?

A: Marijuana can be harmful in a number of ways, through immediate effects and through damage to health over time.

Marijuana hinders the user's short-term memory (memory for recent events), and he or she may have trouble handling complex tasks. With the use of more potent varieties of marijuana, even simple tasks can be difficult.

Because of the drug's effects on perceptions and reaction time, users could be involved in auto crashes. Drug users also may become involved in risky sexual behaviors, which could lead to the spread of HIV, the virus that causes AIDS.

Under the influence of marijuana, students may find it hard to study and learn. Young athletes could find their performance is off; timing, movements, and coordination are all affected by THC.

Q: What are the long-term effects of marijuana?

A: Although all of the long-term effects of marijuana use are not yet known, there are studies showing serious health concerns. For example, a group of scientists in California examined the health status of 450 daily smokers of marijuana, but not tobacco. They found that the marijuana smokers had more sick days and more doctor visits for respiratory problems and other types of illness than did a similar group who did not smoke either substance.

Findings so far show that the regular use of marijuana may play a role in cancer and problems of the immune and respiratory systems.

Cancer

It is hard to find out whether marijuana alone causes cancer, because many people who smoke marijuana also smoke cigarettes and use other drugs. Marijuana smoke contains some of the same cancer-causing compounds as tobacco, sometimes in higher concentrations. Studies show that someone who smokes five joints per day may be taking in as many cancer-causing chemicals as someone who smokes a full pack of cigarettes every day.

Tobacco smoke and marijuana smoke may work together to change the tissues lining the respiratory tract. Marijuana smoking could contribute to early development of head and neck cancer in some people.

Immune system

Our immune system protects the body from many agents that cause disease. It is not certain whether marijuana damages the immune system of people. But both animal and human studies have shown that marijuana impairs the ability of T-cells in the lungs' immune system to fight off some infections.

Lungs and airways

People who smoke marijuana regularly may develop many of the same breathing problems that tobacco smokers have, such as daily cough and phlegm production, more frequent chest colds, a heightened risk of lung infections, and a greater tendency toward obstructed airways. Marijuana smokers usually inhale more deeply and hold their breath longer, which increases the lungs' exposure to toxic chemicals and irritants.

UK News of USA 420

obama reefersmokeHigh times for American marijuana smokers as police allow thousands of '4/20' pot protesters to light up across the country
Read more from the Daily Mail:

Oh man, if Obama were a young man now, would he be on the front-lines? Sure hope his staff share this brilliant story published about National weed day in America, by the Daily Mail of London today. It's filled with good honest pictures of young people (and old) having a good 'ole time, not hurting anyone, enjoying a reefer or two.
The Daily mail description was fair, I thought:

Marijuana smokers across the America lit up in public parks, outside statehouses and in the posh confines of a Hummer parked outside a pot gardening superstore to observe the movement's annual 'high holiday' yesterday.
Those who weren't within whiffing distance of a college campus or a reggae concert may not have realised that Tuesday was '4/20', the celebration-cum-mass civil disobedience derived from '420' - insider shorthand for cannabis consumption.

This really and outstanding piece of web journalism. Read more from the Daily Mail.

American Marijuana-Thon

Weed Flag PatchWow it feels like we've reached the tipping point! The marijuana debate has taken over the mainstream media as evidenced by CNBC hosting an entire day of discussions, interviews and segments about marijuana in America, they even advertised it as the "Marijuana-Thon" as though the producers themselves were smoking some green-crack when they planned the schedule. Plus they developed a web section on their website called Marijuana & Money which features over 40 articles, analysis and commentary of the most interesting, honest and useful information imaginable. CNBC even included a State by State comprehensive guide to marijuana laws, enforcement statistics, medical marijuana programs and costs. Then if that's not enough to answer any question and share some truth they added several color photo galleries which include eye candy smoking gear and exquisite cannabis porn.

  • Marijuana In America - A look at how marijuana figures into the history and culture of the nation.

  • Marijuana: By The Numbers - Pot use and laws vary widely from state to state. Here are some highlights.

  • Top Marijuana Travel Destinations - Some places have turned a blind eye to personal use, encouraging travelers from around the globe to visit, with commentary by Danny Danko from High Times

  • Tools of the Trade - Marijuana users experience the drug in a variety of ways, and various products exist to facilitate consumption.

  • A Gallery of Medical Marijuana - With medical use legal 14 states, there's quite an assortment of varieties available.

Big Kudos to CNBC. In the Editors introduction, Albert Bozzo, Senior Features Editor at CNBC.com explains why they launched this incredible website and dedicated so much time and resources to the topic of Marijuana in America, here's a tiny excerpt to whet your whistle:

Money, Ideology, Policy

Slowly over the past four decades, the drug has worked its way into the nation's social fabric. Baby boomers and counter-culture types of the past are now leaders, movers and shakers, who want to see marijuana over the counter.

HempCon is a premiere event held at the where exhibitors from all over California and across the United States come showcase their products, educate about their services and promote awareness about the Medical Marijuana community.

This year's show will feature Keynote addresses from two of the top Medical Marijuana activists in Southern California and the US, Cheryl Shuman and Frederic Rhoades from Beverly Hills NORML. Cheryl is the Executive Director of Beverly Hills NORML (National Organization for the Reform Of Marijuana Laws) and Frederic is the Director of Operations, both of whom are widely recognized and respected voices in the Marijuana community. Along with Cheryl and Fred, there will be a list of events all day long, every day consisting of guest speakers to educate and guest entertainers to elevate your spirits while taking in the show. This year's lineup of speakers speakers, entertainers and exhibitors guarantees that HempCon 2010 will be the most fun you'll have at an event all year.

Spannabis 2010

spannabis_2010.jpgIf you live in Europe and you're a weed grower, cannabis seed company, hemp product manufacturer, cannabis advocate or marijuana activist the place to be today is Barcelona, Spain for Spannabis 2010 which starts today and runs through Sunday at the Cornellá's convention center

This enormous Hemp festival is held in a 8,000 m2 expo space with over 150 exhibitioners, showing a wide variety products, ranging from industrial hemp to materials for cultivating, various paraphernalia and of course the world's best known seed banks.  Also in attendance are the cannabis associations and various professionals of the weed world, making Spannabis an excellent place to meet cool people and network.

One of the most popular events at Spannabis is the Cannabis Champions Cup. Last year attendance reached over 18,000 people in a three day period.  DJ's with all the best music and people in costumes parading through the isles will be present to add an extra element to the atmosphere.

Bob Marley Movement Caribbean Festival

caribbean_festival.png

The Caribbean Festival is the best party of the year in Miami and this year will be the 17th Annual, this time back in Bayfront Park, right downtown in Miami on the bay in a fabulous outdoor amphitheater. The event is sort of like a Marley family party combined with a food drive for South Florida charity. This year the festival is dedicated to the memory of Cedella Booker Marley (Mother Bee, Bob Marley's Mom), who passed away last year. The line-up of talent is excellent as always and one thing you can count-on is that at some point during the festival there will be set played as a tribute to Bob Marley, where you'll see the family, old friends and guest musicians, all come together to jam to some great Bob Marley songs. Another thing you can count on is more ganja smoking in one place than you ever imagined possible. To learn more visit Caribbean Festival.

Western Slope Cannabis Crown

cannabis_crown.jpgIf Hunter S. Thompson were still alive he'd have been the "Master of Ceremony" and I'll wager that if he hadn't of thought of the idea he would have thought it was an outstanding concept but none-the-less, the smart folks from "High Country Caregivers" probably got really high one day and dream't up this clever idea. I mean really, is there a better place in continental USA to host such an event? How high do you want to get?

Already the Western Slope Cannabis Crown, held April 17-18, will include as many as 400 strains of weed, live music, guest speakers, and information about medical marijuana. The event is open to the public, but only registered medical users can buy weed or get their hands on "golden tickets" to let them sample all the entries.

"We're really almost sold out already," said Joe McVicker of High Country Caregivers, a Glenwood Springs dispensary helping organize the event. "There were, like, 1,500 tickets and we probably have, like, 40 now."

Luckily, for those of us too stoned and lazy to go all the way to Glenwood Springs for a $25 ticket, McVicker said there's another 80 or so on Craigslist. Oh, and some place in Denver called Green Thumb has them, too, but he wasn't sure where it is. (No joke.)

"We're going to have Hunter S. Thompson's wife here for a chat, and the editor of High Times will be here, too," McVicker said. "We're gonna help people get [medical marijuana] cards, and it's just going to be a good time."

Cannabis strains will be judged based on THC levels and how well they treat different medical problems. Golden ticket holders will help choose a people's choice, but expert judges will select the winner, and McVicker thinks the grower will win a trip to Amsterdam. For more information, you could visit the website, but it's, you know, still in the works. For more information visit www.cannabiscrown.com.

Michigan Caregivers Cup

weed_trophy.jpgOne of the great byproducts of the movement to legalize medical marijuana is the immergence of independent cannabis cup "type" marijuana growing contests. Who could have ever imagined a fancy hotel ballroom filled with weed connoisseurs and the proud growers that supply the medical marijuana dispensaries all showing off their hybrid strains of designer dope? This is a great time to be a pot-head.

Last September Colorado Caregivers had there first contest and now it's the Michigan Caregivers Cup. It's too late to enter, deadline was Dec. 18th for submission of forms with payment of $100 and proof of Caregivers license, for the privilege of providing two and half ounces of your best bud, to be judged by a panel of 140 judges. However, it's not too late to become a judge and that's the job at this event but take note that there's only 100 judge's passes available at $250 each, so make sure to take action today if you want to participate in the first annual Michigan Care Givers Cup.

The conference, exposition, concerts, and main event are being held to raise political and social awareness of the necessity of structure within the law. The funds generated from this event will be utilized in order to compete with those that will continue to view those of us in the medical marijuana field as criminals. Get more information here.
