Teapot Party Meetup

Teapot Party on FacebookOur new leader of the 420 Army has taken up the mantle! This is the catalyst we've been waiting for, the blunder of one dumb cop, has gotten the ball rolling in what will become the movement to turn the tide in the battle to legalize marijuana. Take action now! This is an insurgency (peaceful, since we're stoners) and this is your call to duty.

Willie Nelson sparked a new political effort after his arrest for marijuana, telling CelebStoner.com, "There's a Tea Party. How about a Teapot Party?

Our motto: 'We lean a little to the left.' Tax it, regulate it, legalize it."

Now it's our chance to join together to get this Teapot Party started! We need to demand change and back candidates who want to legalize marijuana and hemp as their main issue. Get together with other Teapot supporters by joining a Meetup near you, or take action on-line by joining, and then sharing the Facebook group with your friends.

Fear and Loathing of the Border

aaday-aka-reefersmoke.jpg

You may ask yourself why I wouldn't be blogging about this great adventure, while I was in it? And what protecting my innocence has to do with anything? Well, here's my story; I'm the fool that registered the Domain ReeferPoker.com which was seized by the Governor of Kentucky along with 140 other poker related Domains in September 2008, in a bogus attempt to extort money from online gambling website operators. (Side note - the Gov lost his job in the mid-term elections). Also, I'm about the only person that I know who refuses to adopt a false online identity to use while working in the online gaming biz, and I've been involved, as a Canadian citizen, in the gaming industry, in one capacity or another, since it's inception. My first project was in Curacao in 1995, where I met my Brazilian wife, which subsequently brought me to Brazil. Anyway, the point is, that every time I cross the border into the USA I'm sent to what is known as; secondary inspection - feels more like purgatory.

The reason I always get sent to secondary inspection when crossing into the U.S. is because I have a waiver, as a result of a possession of marijuana charge from 1979, which was conditionally discharged in Canada (dismissed on a plea bargain, since it was a reefer), however due to zero tolerance in the U.S., I was denied entry in 1995 and forced to apply for a legal waiver, which took 6 months and cost several thousand dollars to obtain. Since then every time I cross the border I'm stuck waiting and sweating in a purgatory holding area, until the Homeland Security Officers double-check my clearance on those massive databases they access, then let me cross over. These are times of great anxiety for me because I never know when the words "come with us Mr. Smoke" will send me on my way to Guantanamo Bay, without habeas corpus.

If you can imagine, it's very difficult to travel to Canada from Brazil without going through USA, so a couple of times of year I find myself in this state of Patriot Law fear. I consider the permission to travel to America a privilege, not a right, and therefore I covet my travel documents like they were the keys to the kingdom but it says right on my waiver documents that my clearance is determined by the officer on the occasion of each entry and the waiver is null and void if I break any laws. In other words: if my name is anywhere in any of those databases, my travel plans will be significantly altered, then and there. Other gaming site operators have been detained for years, so I never know if I'll get the stamp on the passport or the cuffs on my wrists but to date Reefer Poker has flown under the radar. That is all about to change....

Maybe even writing this blog post will someday put an end to my vision of building an online community for people who enjoy smoking weed while they play poker. Oh well, I made my bed etc... and the truth is; that I feel that part of my purpose in life is to try to make people see the hypocrisy in any government attempting to prohibit citizens from enjoying harmless fun, while inside their own homes. The Canadian government really needs a reality check too, as they completely profit from online gambling and licensing of medical marijuana but continue to enforce ridiculous laws against both poker and pot and the U.S. government is actually causing massive pain and suffering with their hypocrisy but I never intended to become a martyr over this issue, it's just that I'm more about reefer than I am about poker, so I decided it was time to speak my mind and let the chips fall where they may.

When I started this blog the title was "High Stakes Cannabis Culture", as a tongue-in-cheek reference to the risks involved in building a company around 2 things that were prohibited in the main markets that we focus on, North America. Well now I just raised the stakes again and will continue to promote my idea of freedom - smoke reefer and play poker. Now, even writing this confession could be my un-doing or perhaps I just removed USA off my future travel itinerary and I'll need to find a new way back to Canada via Mexico, Panama or Europe. Oh well, I can't stand to live with this deception and worse than that; it makes me crazy to see that USA appears to be moving backwards (again) with regards to legalizing marijuana. As a Canadian I feel a kinship with Mexican's and to witness what is being done to their country by this prohibition makes me feel sick, how can we stand by and say nothing?

One of the things I wanted to avoid with this blog was ranting. I set out to write about the good things that I see and learn about cannabis, the wonderful people I've met along the way, the scientific breakthroughs related to it's miraculous natural power, the marvelous beauty of the plant and the sheer pleasure of getting high from recreational smoking. That was my mission and I'm sticking to it, as there's enough truth-seekers out there exposing the global government insanity and the corporate conspiracies surrounding this defenseless plant. Now that I've confessed and explained more about why I promote reefer and poker, I'll get on with blogging about my amazing journey. Truth will set us free.

God offers to every mind its choice between truth and repose. Take which you please - you can never have both. ~Ralph Waldo Emerson

Stay tuned for more confessions of a reefer maniac...

American Marijuana-Thon

Weed Flag PatchWow it feels like we've reached the tipping point! The marijuana debate has taken over the mainstream media as evidenced by CNBC hosting an entire day of discussions, interviews and segments about marijuana in America, they even advertised it as the "Marijuana-Thon" as though the producers themselves were smoking some green-crack when they planned the schedule. Plus they developed a web section on their website called Marijuana & Money which features over 40 articles, analysis and commentary of the most interesting, honest and useful information imaginable. CNBC even included a State by State comprehensive guide to marijuana laws, enforcement statistics, medical marijuana programs and costs. Then if that's not enough to answer any question and share some truth they added several color photo galleries which include eye candy smoking gear and exquisite cannabis porn.

  • Marijuana In America - A look at how marijuana figures into the history and culture of the nation.

  • Marijuana: By The Numbers - Pot use and laws vary widely from state to state. Here are some highlights.

  • Top Marijuana Travel Destinations - Some places have turned a blind eye to personal use, encouraging travelers from around the globe to visit, with commentary by Danny Danko from High Times

  • Tools of the Trade - Marijuana users experience the drug in a variety of ways, and various products exist to facilitate consumption.

  • A Gallery of Medical Marijuana - With medical use legal 14 states, there's quite an assortment of varieties available.

Big Kudos to CNBC. In the Editors introduction, Albert Bozzo, Senior Features Editor at CNBC.com explains why they launched this incredible website and dedicated so much time and resources to the topic of Marijuana in America, here's a tiny excerpt to whet your whistle:

Money, Ideology, Policy

Slowly over the past four decades, the drug has worked its way into the nation's social fabric. Baby boomers and counter-culture types of the past are now leaders, movers and shakers, who want to see marijuana over the counter.

Afghanistan Cannabis Survey

soldiers and drugsOn April fools day the United Nations Office of Drugs and Crime released the Afghanistan Cannabis Survey just to let the world know, or at least anyone paying attention, that there's more than just Opium flowing out of Afghanistan. Every day since the survey was released there's been stories in the media about the bumper crop of cannabis grown in Afghanistan this year. Now people are realizing that the world's top producer of opium is also handy at growing weed and making great hash. Since 2006 they've bumped Morocco out of that top spot for Hash production. Well they should be good hash makers, since they've been practicing for hundreds of years, it's sad and shameful that they can't proudly compete in the Amsterdam Cannabis Cup with their great products, instead they get bullied.

The Afghanistan Cannabis Survey estimates the amount of Hash to be 3,500 tons worth approximately $94 Million USD. First off, just for conversation sake, that's just under $13.50 per pound which is very lousy for the producer considering the best discount price to be $10 per gram with over 453 grams in a pound for the equivalent of $4,530 on the street in Europe or America, this makes one of the best profit margins of any commodity grown anywhere. However, $27,000 is allot of cake for a ton of hash, is there a commodity exchange? Do they hire brokers? Can it be bought FOB?

The thought of all that hashish being created inside a war-zone has made me curious about how it get's to market and if history has repeated itself where the U.S. Military has gotten involved in the transportation and black-market trading of all that non-taxable, non-traceable cash generating commodity? Guess we'll just have to wait for the Hollywood mockumentary "Air Afghanistan" by the spin doctors at the department of mis-information, hopefully Oliver North can make a cameo. It's always easier to make a movie of any serious criminal allegations involving the military or U.S. Government.

In terms of growing and producing 3,500 tons of hashish the same UN report cited that 10,000 to 24,000 hectares of cannabis are grown in Afghanistan every year and that this is used to make an estimated 1,500 to 3,500 tons of hashish annually. Just think of the industry is takes to create that many tons of hash, this is a more serious proposition than growing corn and then producing your own nacho chips. It takes more than a cottage industry to produce 3,500 tons of hash in fact the number of cannabis growing households in 2009 was estimated at 40,000 households. Based on this calculation the number of households involved in cannabis cultivation ranges between 25,000 and 60,000. Income from cannabis Based on prices at the time of resin extraction (January 2010) and the average resin yield of 2009, farmers could achieve a gross cash income per hectare of US$ 3,890/ha (rounded US$ 3,900/ha) from cannabis resin. This is slightly more than the gross income from opium was in 2009 (US$ 3,600/ha). The gross income from cannabis resin does not take into account the potential value of cannabis by-products such as cannabis seeds, stalks or even homemade hashish.

The Afghanistan Cannabis Survey provides all the information you need to know about the growing of marijuana and the production of hashish in Afghanistan. It's the first such survey and very scientific in it's approach, every detail of how the information is collected is explained and lot's of maps, charts, photos and satellite pictures are included to explain details of how and why cannabis is a summer crop in all the farms where opium is a winter crop. Fascinating descriptions of how the cannabis is sieved and then sold and that often times it's the exporters who have the equipment and resources to make the hash. Even the locations of the cannabis resin "garda" markets where the pollen is sold. This report provides an amazing insight into the world of cannabis farming and hash production in Afghanistan.

Make sure you read the Afghanistan Cannabis Survey

Afghani Bullrider

afghani_bullrider.jpgNow here's a weed if there ever was one that surpasses it's mystique and lives up to it's legend. What I love most about this cannabis strain is that it's more often than not grown outdoor because of it's reputation as a hearty breed, fond of the long California summers. In more recent times, with the world gone mad for whole foods and paranoid of chemicals, rightfully so, this durable strain is often grown organically. When primo Afghani Bullrider buds find there way to your grinder be grateful and give thanks to the Cannabis Gods, for you have in your hands one of the most exotic weed strains on earth.

The Bullrider Legend: In the same issue of High Times Magazine as Toker Poker there was a story called "The Bull Rider's Journey" in which the author Jef Tek tells the myth of an African-American dude who was a professional Bull Rider that was passionate about growing weed. As the story goes, this Bullrider traveled allot and knew at least one serious grower from overseas who bestowed the seeds upon him, after which he arrived in California and grew the plant to full-strength and cured it, then the bull-rider and some friends smoked some of the bud, after which one of the friends remarked that he felt like he'd just been riding a bull - bam!

The Afghani Bullrider name stuck and ever since the late '80's the strain found it's way all over California in clone form. At one point someone even created Hats and T-shirts to commemorate the great strain. Growers as far away as Oregon and Vancouver managed to get their hands on either the seeds or the clones as the Afghani Bullrider strain made it's way far and wide. However, it's Southern California where the climate provides an endless budding season, all you need to do is place a clone outside and it will begin to produce buds. As with most indica-dominant strains the Afghani Bullrider will reach maturity within 8 weeks or less and deliver an impressive harvest.

Marijuana Fun Facts

Kush-trichome-closeup.jpgThe UN estimates that up to 190 million people use cannabis, representing 4% of the global adult population, compared with 1% of the population, which uses all other illegal drugs together.  Thus cannabis is by far the most used controlled drug in the world, making it the mainstay of the War on Drugs. In the United States alone there were an estimated 829,625 arrests for cannabis violations in 2006.  Despite these figures, cannabis continues to be largely ignored in international drug policy debates.  Here is a list of 10 other interesting facts about marijuana.

1. According to one national survey on drug use, each day approximately 6,000 Americans try marijuana for the first time.
2. Worldwide, it is estimated that about 162 million adults use marijuana at least once per year, and 22.5 million use the drug daily.
3. Marijuana usage is a ritual part of many religious traditions throughout the world. In Islamic nations, it is accepted alongside coffee and tobacco while alcohol is strictly prohibited.
4. According to one report, it would take 800 joints to kill a person "but the cause of death would be carbon monoxide poisoning.
5. There are over 200 slang terms for marijuana in the popular vernacular.
6. The name marijuana comes from a Mexican slang term for cannabis and is believed to have derived from the Spanish pronunciation of the names Mary and Jane. (The two names were also common Mexican military slang for a prostitute or brothel.) Marijuana came into popularity as a name for cannabis in the U.S. during the late 1800s.
7. The cannabis plant can grow in nearly any environment and averages one to two inches of growth per day and up to 18 feet total in ideal conditions.
8. The primary active ingredient in marijuana is THC (delta 9 tetrhydrocannabinol). It is this chemical that produces marijuana's mind-altering effects.
9. Depending upon the weather conditions, soil type, and time of harvest for a cannabis plant, as well as the specific mixture of dried leaves and flowers in the marijuana product, a sample of marijuana can contain anywhere from 3% to 20% THC.
10. Cannabis seeds were used as a food source in China as early as 6000 B.C.

Western Slope Cannabis Crown

cannabis_crown.jpgIf Hunter S. Thompson were still alive he'd have been the "Master of Ceremony" and I'll wager that if he hadn't of thought of the idea he would have thought it was an outstanding concept but none-the-less, the smart folks from "High Country Caregivers" probably got really high one day and dream't up this clever idea. I mean really, is there a better place in continental USA to host such an event? How high do you want to get?

Already the Western Slope Cannabis Crown, held April 17-18, will include as many as 400 strains of weed, live music, guest speakers, and information about medical marijuana. The event is open to the public, but only registered medical users can buy weed or get their hands on "golden tickets" to let them sample all the entries.

"We're really almost sold out already," said Joe McVicker of High Country Caregivers, a Glenwood Springs dispensary helping organize the event. "There were, like, 1,500 tickets and we probably have, like, 40 now."

Luckily, for those of us too stoned and lazy to go all the way to Glenwood Springs for a $25 ticket, McVicker said there's another 80 or so on Craigslist. Oh, and some place in Denver called Green Thumb has them, too, but he wasn't sure where it is. (No joke.)

"We're going to have Hunter S. Thompson's wife here for a chat, and the editor of High Times will be here, too," McVicker said. "We're gonna help people get [medical marijuana] cards, and it's just going to be a good time."

Cannabis strains will be judged based on THC levels and how well they treat different medical problems. Golden ticket holders will help choose a people's choice, but expert judges will select the winner, and McVicker thinks the grower will win a trip to Amsterdam. Poker on Marijuana

rp_pocket-aces.jpgWhy do many of the best poker players in the world smoke weed? What is it about marijuana that gives the smoker an advantage in tournament poker? These are questions that get asked more often than you'd expect and not just at online poker rooms such as Reefer Poker, which obviously, by it's namesake, cater to the hoards from the cannabis culture, who are in their own homes and have chosen to play with other like-minded individuals but what about the Poker Pros we see on TV?

Many Professional Poker players who compete in high-stakes tournaments, often televised, such as the World Series of Poker on ESPN, are known to be chronic marijuana smokers. California and Nevada have booming businesses in medical marijuana, it's fast, simple, and affordable to acquire a license in Las Vegas to smoke marijuana legally and once licensed an entire catalog of medicinal marijuana is available to the patient/card player. Various cannabis strains have recommendations for various ailments as well as reviews and testimonials of the effects of smoking, plus a qualified bud-tender is always on hand at the cannabis dispensary, to suggest certain types or strains that are best suited for playing poker.

Let's drop the Hollywood stoner stereotype for the sake of this discussion and consider that a Poker Pro has been smoking weed for 10 years or more and is good at bluffing (that he's not stoned) and after a break only his closest friends, or whomever he's been smoking with, has any idea that he's just quaffed (ie. Smoked) a reefer of the strongest, medicinal grade cannabis, known to mankind, and now he has his Poker-face on, behind a relaxed nonchalant looking, often smiling face. However his heart is beating slightly faster but more importantly a part of his brain that is usually not very active has now kicked-in to high-gear and the Poker Pro is collecting detailed information about his opponents that they're not even aware he can read. In short, the Card player high on marijuana is like a poker scientist in stealth mode. As a side note: I've referred to the Poker Pro as "he" because the vast majority of Pro's are male but I happen to know that female poker pros also regularly play high, especially online.

Reblog this post [with Zemanta]

According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, in 2007, 14.4 million Americans smoked marijuana at least once in the month prior to being surveyed. That number is likely very low as many people will never admit to consumption of a banned substance, in a survey, to someone they've never met. The same research says that about 6,000 people a day in 2007 used marijuana for the first time--2.1 million Americans have discovered something about smoking marijuana that they like and many of them discovered that THC, the main active ingredients in cannabis, improved their mood and enhanced their activities whether it be work or play. The fact is that we live in a wired world, during this information-age, for the masses life is connected to the Internet and weed enhances almost anything online, especially poker, which may explain why the number of smokers is so close to the number of people who play online poker. Not saying that everyone playing poker online is high, just that it's an interesting coincidence that the number of smokers and the number of players in nearly the same.

So what is it about marijuana that provides an advantage to the poker player who smokes it? To help answer this question we need to understand what ailments are commonly treated with medicinal marijuana and what scientific evidence of efficacy (effectiveness) exists from clinical applications. The list of ailments is very long and contains such neuron type issues as Alzheimer's, tics, Tourette syndrome, obsessive compulsive disorder, post traumatic stress syndrome and perhaps the most common ailment to receive a medicinal marijuana prescription; attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), which some people joke, is an ailment that our entire society suffers from. Every day more clinical studies are being conducted to provide further proof but to a seasoned Poker player they don't need an FDA approval to know that when they smoke the herb it brings a certain feeling of calm to their brain that enables them to acutely tune-in on everything going on at the table. Marijuana is like a performance enhancing drug for the poker-playing mind and enables them to smoke the competition.

Starbud Cannabis Indica

starbud_indica.jpgThe 22nd Cannabis Cup concluded last week in Amsterdam and the winners were announced on the website Cannabis Cup Winners and it comes as no surprise that Greenhouse Seeds of Holland take first prize for the second year running for the Super Lemon Haze, which is the first strain to repeat since Greenhouse did it with Super Silver Haze in 1999. Barney's was runner-up with their popular Vanilla Kush and Green Place placed third with their strain Head Bang.

It was good to see that BC Bud Depot place third in the Sativa Category, since Barney's took home allot of honors but Green House Seeds either won or placed a strain in every category except the Indica category, where top honors went to another two time consecutive first place winner of the Cannabis Cup: Starbud (pictured) from Hortilab Seed Company.

Medical Marijuana

medical_marijuana.jpgSo much has been said and written about the Pros and Cons of Medical Marijuana by people from all walks of life and strata of society, it just doesn't seem to matter, we're going to suffer the consequence of the reefer madness brain-washing for years to come. However, on the scientific side of the argument "should marijuana be legal for medical use" tomorrow a 56 year old stockbroker from Florida, named Irvin Rosenfeld (see: No Dope: Ft. Lauderdale Man to Smoke 115,000th Joint) will add his record to the case studies by being the first person on record to have smoked 115,000 reefers while in a Federal Drug Administration's Investigational New Drug Program. Not only are there no signs of negative health issues or work performance in the case of Rosenfeld but he provides yet another powerful testimonial of the benefits derived from this plant.

The medical marijuana that Rosenfeld is supplied by Uncle Sam comes from the University of Mississippi Weed Farm, the only federally approved farm in the United States. Mahmoud A. ElSohly, PhD, whom we once wrote about in this blog, is a Research Professor at the Research Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Mississippi, stated the following in a Dec. 19, 2005 interview with the Journal of the International Hemp Association:

"Cannabis as a smoked product, in my judgment, would not be a useful product simply because of the lack of standardization, the fact that it's a smoked material: you can't determine the dose, people smoke in different ways, plus the interaction of the many different components and degradation products, and the tars associated with smoked materials. So smoking is not a good delivery system.

However, cannabis as a plant that is rich in chemical components, would have potential for producing useful drugs, for example THC. Now THC in the oral preparation, it doesn't seem to be doing the good job it should or was expected to. My personal view on the reason for this is the 'first-pass effect.' The material taken orally goes through the liver and is converted to the 11-hydroxy metabolite, which is 4-5 times more potent in terms of psychoactivity, before getting into the bloodstream, and the profile of these two drugs is quite different."

Not sure if I completely agree with the good Doctor since some people may have placebo effects from smoking their medicine but this brings up a good argument for just legalizing marijuana because obviously no-one has, can, or will, be hurt from smoking weed, so let's get cracking on the research. Also, let's separate the medical marijuana debate from recreational ganja and begin two distinctly different dialogs. Legalize both!

Cannabis Smoke in Europe

cannabis_europe.jpgSome people say that European's are more conservative than us Americans, well that may be so but they still love to smoke weed according to a recent report, which was featured in the Economist as: "Pot Luck" - Cannabis Use in Europe.

Which Europeans are most likely to have tried cannabis?

OVER a fifth of Europeans have taken cannabis at some point in their lives, according to new report on illegal drug use from the EMCDDA, the EU's drug-monitoring arm. Over 30% of Danes, French and Italians aged between 15 and 64 have puffed on a joint. But perhaps for Danes it is just a phase: the Italians, Spanish, French and Czechs are most likely to have dabbled with cannabis in the recent past. Levels of cannabis use are still high but may be declining, says the report. Recent studies suggest that the drug's popularity is waning among the younger generation.

The obvious glaring statistics in this report is that Netherlands and Portugal, the two counties that have decriminalized marijuana have less smokers than many of the countries that have not decriminalized. Another really interesting finding is that Denmark, by far, leads as the highest percentage of European people who have smoked cannabis during their lifetimes. No wonder they call them the "Great Danes".

According to WeBeHigh.com - A traveler's guide to getting high. It's really easy to score weed in Copenhagen and many of the other cities in Denmark. Travelers have written that the varieties of weed include skunk, white widow and hash, so apparently these folks know their gear, oh and the prices are decent too, at 5 to 15 Euros per gram. Interestingly, the tolerance from law enforcement is listed as quite low but check this:

Copenhagen police do not look for smokers, or as one of our reporters noted: "several times I have walked right past 5-6 police officers while smoking a blunt... most of the times they won't try anything because that will cause a sort of riot and lots of flying bricks".

Our conservative cousins in Europe are just having some fun and hypocrisy of "the dangers of marijuana" has been dispelled. The world is becoming more conscious.

Northern Lights

northern_light.jpgNamed for the glimmer of the trichomes and crystals covering the buds, to conjure up images of the Aurora Borealis (northern lights). Many of the top Canadian seed companies sell Northern Lights (strain) cannabis seeds and since it's one of the most commonly crossed strains of hybrid cannabis there's legions of stable strains born of these genetics. This magnificent plant has probably won or placed in the High Times Cannabis Cup more times than any other single strain.

Legend has it that the strain was created in Washington State but some say that she may have been amongst the earliest sativa strains crossed with Indica in Humboldt California way back in the mid 1970's. However, Northern Lights strain has been preserved much as it originally was through inbreeding without any marked improvements other than hybridization.

Effect: One hit wonder
Stature: Very short and squat
Phenotype: Mixed, primarily Indica
Indoor: 55 to 60 days: Mid/late September
Smell: A Sweet Classic Skunky odor Yield: 2/3 ounces per plant
