American Marijuana-Thon

Weed Flag PatchWow it feels like we've reached the tipping point! The marijuana debate has taken over the mainstream media as evidenced by CNBC hosting an entire day of discussions, interviews and segments about marijuana in America, they even advertised it as the "Marijuana-Thon" as though the producers themselves were smoking some green-crack when they planned the schedule. Plus they developed a web section on their website called Marijuana & Money which features over 40 articles, analysis and commentary of the most interesting, honest and useful information imaginable. CNBC even included a State by State comprehensive guide to marijuana laws, enforcement statistics, medical marijuana programs and costs. Then if that's not enough to answer any question and share some truth they added several color photo galleries which include eye candy smoking gear and exquisite cannabis porn.

  • Marijuana In America - A look at how marijuana figures into the history and culture of the nation.

  • Marijuana: By The Numbers - Pot use and laws vary widely from state to state. Here are some highlights.

  • Top Marijuana Travel Destinations - Some places have turned a blind eye to personal use, encouraging travelers from around the globe to visit, with commentary by Danny Danko from High Times

  • Tools of the Trade - Marijuana users experience the drug in a variety of ways, and various products exist to facilitate consumption.

  • A Gallery of Medical Marijuana - With medical use legal 14 states, there's quite an assortment of varieties available.

Big Kudos to CNBC. In the Editors introduction, Albert Bozzo, Senior Features Editor at CNBC.com explains why they launched this incredible website and dedicated so much time and resources to the topic of Marijuana in America, here's a tiny excerpt to whet your whistle:

Money, Ideology, Policy

Slowly over the past four decades, the drug has worked its way into the nation's social fabric. Baby boomers and counter-culture types of the past are now leaders, movers and shakers, who want to see marijuana over the counter.

Afghani Bullrider

afghani_bullrider.jpgNow here's a weed if there ever was one that surpasses it's mystique and lives up to it's legend. What I love most about this cannabis strain is that it's more often than not grown outdoor because of it's reputation as a hearty breed, fond of the long California summers. In more recent times, with the world gone mad for whole foods and paranoid of chemicals, rightfully so, this durable strain is often grown organically. When primo Afghani Bullrider buds find there way to your grinder be grateful and give thanks to the Cannabis Gods, for you have in your hands one of the most exotic weed strains on earth.

The Bullrider Legend: In the same issue of High Times Magazine as Toker Poker there was a story called "The Bull Rider's Journey" in which the author Jef Tek tells the myth of an African-American dude who was a professional Bull Rider that was passionate about growing weed. As the story goes, this Bullrider traveled allot and knew at least one serious grower from overseas who bestowed the seeds upon him, after which he arrived in California and grew the plant to full-strength and cured it, then the bull-rider and some friends smoked some of the bud, after which one of the friends remarked that he felt like he'd just been riding a bull - bam!

The Afghani Bullrider name stuck and ever since the late '80's the strain found it's way all over California in clone form. At one point someone even created Hats and T-shirts to commemorate the great strain. Growers as far away as Oregon and Vancouver managed to get their hands on either the seeds or the clones as the Afghani Bullrider strain made it's way far and wide. However, it's Southern California where the climate provides an endless budding season, all you need to do is place a clone outside and it will begin to produce buds. As with most indica-dominant strains the Afghani Bullrider will reach maturity within 8 weeks or less and deliver an impressive harvest.

Marijuana Fun Facts

Kush-trichome-closeup.jpgThe UN estimates that up to 190 million people use cannabis, representing 4% of the global adult population, compared with 1% of the population, which uses all other illegal drugs together.  Thus cannabis is by far the most used controlled drug in the world, making it the mainstay of the War on Drugs. Dr. Lester Grinspoon

potrecon.jpgDr. Lester Grinspoon may very well be the most influential marijuana activist of all time. If there were an award for achievement in changing the way people think about smoking marijuana Dr. Grinspoon would win hands down. During his more than 4 decades of honest intellectual contributions and recommendation for re-thinking the use of cannabis and the laws related to marijuana Dr. Grinspoon founded the Harvard Mental Health Letter, and was its editor for fifteen years, which among other qualifications, put him in a better position than any contemporary American physician to tell the truth about drugs.

Dr. Grinspoon is Associate Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and the author or co-author of over 160 journal articles, including his 1995 commentary in the Journal of the American Medical Association entitled "Marihuana as Medicine: A Plea for Reconsideration." His first book, Marihuana Reconsidered, originally published in 1971 by Harvard University Press, was recently republished as a classic. His latest book, Marihuana, the Forbidden Medicine, co-authored with James B. Bakalar, was published by Yale University Press in 1993 (revised and expanded edition, 1997) and has now been translated into ten languages. Dr. Grinspoon was also a reviewer of the 1999 Institute of Medicine report, "Marijuana and Medicine: Assessing the Science Base."

Dr. Grinspoon appeared in the Canadian documentary The Union: The Business of Behind Getting High ~ Also, he has two very good websites that I recommend, plus that you visit and join his Facebook Fan Page.

Medical Marijuana Bootcamp

medical-marijuana-bootcamp.pngAs if Weedmaps and Nugporn wasn't enough, on the first day of this new year those clever (and crazy) folks from the Marijuana News Network launched another new website: Medical Marijuana Bootcamp.

Tang the creator of WeedMaps.com (medical marijuana dispensary finder website) is the brainchild of this new killer project. As (one) of the owners of WeedMaps, he's in a unique position to speak about the medical marijuana business in general, especially in California, because the site is a meeting place for both patients and collectives and Tang is on first-name basis with many of them, plus has an understanding of the cannabis strains that they purvey, which goes way beyond expert.

To not be outdone on the intake and creative output of Tang, a seasoned nug expert was needed, so the dev team recruited the expertise of Chubbs, the founder and connoisseur/weed critic extraordinaire of MarijuanaReviews.com as well as NUGGETRY SD, the premier cannabis collective located in east San Diego. Chubbs has been actively involved in the marijuana movement since 1989, when he started to;experiment with hydroponics. He started the NUGGETRY delivery service based out of Orange County, CA in June of 2009 and became an overnight success.

What's cool about Medical Marijuana Bootcamp is that unlike their earlier projects the primary form of media is video via YouTube and it's light-hearted but serious content about the medicinal cannabis strains and the cannabis collectives of California. These videos are not just a couple of stoners quaffing back huge bong hits, although they do, and then mumbling the first random thoughts to the top of their minds, this content is coherent and interesting. The episodes are fairly improv, so their not scripted, they do have meaning and you will gain value in watching. I'm very impressed with this effort and give the Tang and Chubbs to enthusiastic bongs up!

Poker on Marijuana

rp_pocket-aces.jpgWhy do many of the best poker players in the world smoke weed? What is it about marijuana that gives the smoker an advantage in tournament poker? These are questions that get asked more often than you'd expect and not just at online poker rooms such as Reefer Poker, which obviously, by it's namesake, cater to the hoards from the cannabis culture, who are in their own homes and have chosen to play with other like-minded individuals but what about the Poker Pros we see on TV?

Many Professional Poker players who compete in high-stakes tournaments, often televised, such as the World Series of Poker on ESPN, are known to be chronic marijuana smokers. California and Nevada have booming businesses in medical marijuana, it's fast, simple, and affordable to acquire a license in Las Vegas to smoke marijuana legally and once licensed an entire catalog of medicinal marijuana is available to the patient/card player. Various cannabis strains have recommendations for various ailments as well as reviews and testimonials of the effects of smoking, plus a qualified bud-tender is always on hand at the cannabis dispensary, to suggest certain types or strains that are best suited for playing poker.

Let's drop the Hollywood stoner stereotype for the sake of this discussion and consider that a Poker Pro has been smoking weed for 10 years or more and is good at bluffing (that he's not stoned) and after a break only his closest friends, or whomever he's been smoking with, has any idea that he's just quaffed (ie. Smoked) a reefer of the strongest, medicinal grade cannabis, known to mankind, and now he has his Poker-face on, behind a relaxed nonchalant looking, often smiling face. However his heart is beating slightly faster but more importantly a part of his brain that is usually not very active has now kicked-in to high-gear and the Poker Pro is collecting detailed information about his opponents that they're not even aware he can read. In short, the Card player high on marijuana is like a poker scientist in stealth mode. As a side note: I've referred to the Poker Pro as "he" because the vast majority of Pro's are male but I happen to know that female poker pros also regularly play high, especially online.

Reblog this post [with Zemanta]

According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, in 2007, 14.4 million Americans smoked marijuana at least once in the month prior to being surveyed. That number is likely very low as many people will never admit to consumption of a banned substance, in a survey, to someone they've never met. The same research says that about 6,000 people a day in 2007 used marijuana for the first time--2.1 million Americans have discovered something about smoking marijuana that they like and many of them discovered that THC, the main active ingredients in cannabis, improved their mood and enhanced their activities whether it be work or play. The fact is that we live in a wired world, during this information-age, for the masses life is connected to the Internet and weed enhances almost anything online, especially poker, which may explain why the number of smokers is so close to the number of people who play online poker. Not saying that everyone playing poker online is high, just that it's an interesting coincidence that the number of smokers and the number of players in nearly the same.

So what is it about marijuana that provides an advantage to the poker player who smokes it? To help answer this question we need to understand what ailments are commonly treated with medicinal marijuana and what scientific evidence of efficacy (effectiveness) exists from clinical applications. The list of ailments is very long and contains such neuron type issues as Alzheimer's, tics, Tourette syndrome, obsessive compulsive disorder, post traumatic stress syndrome and perhaps the most common ailment to receive a medicinal marijuana prescription; attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), which some people joke, is an ailment that our entire society suffers from. Every day more clinical studies are being conducted to provide further proof but to a seasoned Poker player they don't need an FDA approval to know that when they smoke the herb it brings a certain feeling of calm to their brain that enables them to acutely tune-in on everything going on at the table. Marijuana is like a performance enhancing drug for the poker-playing mind and enables them to smoke the competition.

King of Cannabis

arjan_strainhunters.jpgArjan is the founder of the Green House Coffeeshops and Seed Company, the most successful cannabis business in the world. Winner of many international awards (32 High times Cannabis Cups, 17 Highlife Cups, and dozens of other awards), a true leader in cannabis genetics. The vision, passion and hard work of Arjan earned him the distinction of being the "King of Cannabis" but he does not rest on his laurels (so to speak), as he continues to search the planet to collect cannabis genetics and landraces with his longtime side-kick Franco and the team known as the Strain Hunters.

In 1985 at the age of 20 Arjan met an old medicine man in Thailand. At that point he'd already spent ten years of his life in Africa and five years in Asia. The old medicine man had a dream: he dreamt of a free cannabis plant. He explained and taught Arjan the religion of this plant. But he also explained he would never win his battle with just money. Passion and love were the only options. No one ever died because of the cannabis plant, but the power of alcohol, tobacco and the pharmaceutical industry prevent this plant from being used and accepted. The medicine man was right. He eventually died, but the day Arjan met him it changed his life. He wanted to bring this dream closer to reality.

Arjan returned to Holland and got to work. Due to the Dutch Law we can't disclose what he did for the next few years up until 1992, but expect you can guess. All his passion and knowledge encouraged him to open the first Green House Coffeeshop, in the Tolstraat in Amsterdam, in 1992. Green House had a different approach from all other existing coffeeshops. Instead of the old, dark and stuffy interiors, the shop was a big open space with colorful artistic decoration created entirely by his wife and himself. They created the first artistic Cafe-Coffeeshop in Holland. Arjan invited Amsterdam Police officials and the city mayor to the opening, and Green House was an instant hit. The judges from the High Times Cannabis Cup dropped by in 1993 and they won several prizes - for best atmosphere, best weed, and more. It was the beginning of the Green House legend, one that thousands of customers experience everyday.

Celebrities from all over the world started visiting Arjan's coffeshop and became his friends. When you visit take a look at his 'Hall of Fame', you'll be surprised by all the famous names that have spent time there, enjoying the same atmosphere as you can. They grew rapidly into a major cannabis enterprise and won prizes every year at the High Times Cannabis Cup, many of which for the best atmosphere or best weed. In 1993 Arjan expanded, opening his second Cafe-Coffeeshop on the Waterlooplein, a busy central square in Amsterdam. He also established the Green House Seed Company. Go to www.greenhouseseeds.nl or look for it on MySpace. They breed and sell the best cannabis genetics in the world.

In 1997 Arjan opened the third Green House cafe-coffeeshop on the Oudezijds Voorburgwal in Amsterdam, in the heart of the famous Red Light District. Again, he developed and made the whole of the interior and decoration themselves - the bar with its sunken mosaic stones lit from beneath, handmade lamps and one-off paintings - all completely unique to the Green House. And more recently, in 2007, he opened the fourth Green House coffeeshop, in the busy Harlemmerstraat. It is a very stylish lounge, with three levels and a huge floor-aquarium with red koi carps. A real cannabis connoisseur paradise, where delicious food is served all day long.

Seasons Bud Greetings

buds.jpgI wanted to take this opportunity, five days from Christmas to wish everyone a very Merry Holiday Season and a safe Happy New Year. The growth of Reefer Smoke this past year has far surpassed my wildest expectations and the cool people I've met as a result of publishing this blog made every minute of the effort well worth while. I've learned allot about the Cannabis Culture around the world from joining related groups, following Stoners on Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and Myspace and by tracking all things 420 related via Google Alerts. This has been a tremendous intellectual journey for me and I have you, the reader, for encouraging me to continue this pursuit.

From the beginning I promised to keep the content light and relaxed, not too serious on the cannabis activism side, avoid news about people getting busted and go easy on the medical marijuana information, although those topics make up the bulk of the daily news in the niche of "marijuana or cannabis" keyword related content on the web, I am first and foremost a recreational reefer smoker and although not currently growing a crop, I'm very passionate about marijuana cultivation, love inspecting live grow-operations around the world and enjoy perving on nug porn.

Just in the last month Reefer Smoke has hosted 6,505 visitors from 96 countries. We thank you all for dropping by and wish you and yours a very happy and buzzed holiday and the stickiest, dankest buds, in the new year.

Northern Lights

northern_light.jpgNamed for the glimmer of the trichomes and crystals covering the buds, to conjure up images of the Aurora Borealis (northern lights). Many of the top Canadian seed companies sell Northern Lights (strain) cannabis seeds and since it's one of the most commonly crossed strains of hybrid cannabis there's legions of stable strains born of these genetics. This magnificent plant has probably won or placed in the High Times Cannabis Cup more times than any other single strain.

Legend has it that the strain was created in Washington State but some say that she may have been amongst the earliest sativa strains crossed with Indica in Humboldt California way back in the mid 1970's. However, Northern Lights strain has been preserved much as it originally was through inbreeding without any marked improvements other than hybridization.

Effect: One hit wonder
Stature: Very short and squat
Phenotype: Mixed, primarily Indica
Indoor: 55 to 60 days: Mid/late September
Smell: A Sweet Classic Skunky odor Yield: 2/3 ounces per plant
